  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to counties; authorizing gifts to nonprofit 
  1.3             organizations; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, 
  1.4             section 465.039. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 465.039, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      465.039 [GIFTS TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS DISTRIBUTING 
  1.9   FOOD.] 
  1.10     The governing body of a county, or of a home rule charter 
  1.11  or statutory city, may appropriate each year out of the its 
  1.12  general fund of the city, or other unrestricted money, an amount 
  1.13  to be determined by the governing body to provide grants to 
  1.14  nonprofit organizations operating community food shelves that 
  1.15  provide food to the needy without charge and other nonprofit 
  1.16  organizations if the governing body determines that the 
  1.17  appropriation is for a public purpose. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.19     Section 1 is effective the day after its final enactment.
