1540.4110 HERMETICALLY SEALED CONTAINERS OF PRODUCT.

Hermetically sealed containers of product which have been submerged or otherwise contaminated as in part 1540.4090 shall be rehandled promptly under supervision of a department employee as follows:

A.

Separate and condemn all product, the containers of which show extensive rusting or corrosion, such as might materially weaken the container, as well as any swollen, leaky, or otherwise suspicious container.

B.

Remove paper labels and wash the containers in warm soapy water, using a brush where necessary to remove rust or other foreign material, immerse in a solution of sodium hypochlorite containing not less than 100 parts per million of available chlorine or other disinfectant approved specifically for this purpose by the commissioner, and rinse in clean fresh water and dry thoroughly.

C.

After handling as in item B, the containers may be relacquered, if necessary, and then relabeled with approved labels applicable to the product therein.

D.

The identity of the canned product shall be maintained throughout all stages of the rehandling operations, to insure correct labeling of the containers.
